Banh Mi Dakao Milpitas

Banh Mi is a Vietnamese sandwich on a baguette with your choice of meat and the usual fillers - carrots, daikon, cucumbers, chili peppers and mayonnaise.  Dakao in Milpitas in our opinion, makes the best Banh Mi in the north San Jose/Santa Clara/Sunnyvale/Milpitas area.  Outside of going to south San Jose and the Vietnamese part of town, Milpitas has a lot of choices for Vietnamese food.

Occasionally for Saturday lunch, we like to pick up a couple of sandwiches as it's our version of a light lunch.  Sandwiches that we usually get are the combination, grilled pork and grilled beef.  Other tasty items that you can buy here are the fried egg rolls and the Vietnamese iced coffee.  Believe it or not - a lunch with two sandwiches, a few egg rolls and a coffee is under $10!  Can't beat that if you're on a budget.

Shabu Shabu from Shabuway in Mountain View

Nothing beats shabu-shabu from Shabuway in Mountain View on a cold Friday night.  As I've learned from reading the menu at Shabuway, shabu-shabu translates in English to swish swish which is what you do with your piece of kobe beef in the broth.

For those of you who has never had shabu-shabu before, it's the Japanese version of hot pot.  The menu is pretty simple - you choose your meat (usually kobe beef) which comes with a veggie platter and then you choose a broth.  The broth that we get is the spicy miso, we've tried many types of broth for shabu-shabu and spicy miso is the best as it's not too spicy but is packed with flavor.  Once you've done this, you're all set as with shabu-shabu you are the cook.  Just take the meat and veggies and drop them in the broth and once it's cooked it's time to eat!  Along with the meat and veggies comes a sesame and ponzu sauce and a bowl of rice.

Since you're doing your own cooking at Shabuway, dinner can take some time as you swish your food around in the broth.  Be sure to not leave it in there too long as you don't want mushy food.  Another tip if you want to have shabu-shabu here, downtown Mountain View can get busy on a Friday night.  Wait times can be up to 1 hour so try to get there early or expect to wait.   For those of you interested in going, here are the some pictures of our last meal and the details:

Lunch at Olive Garden in Milpitas

Just like we were craving Red Robin burgers a few Saturdays ago, we were craving the bread sticks and Zuppa Toscana soup from Olive Garden this particular Saturday.  Now that an Olive Garden is open in the Great Mall in Milpitas, it makes it convenient to go here.  Previously, we had to go to either South San Jose on Blossom Hill Road or to Palo Alto.  Both are easily 20 minute drives compared to a 10 minute drive to this new location.

As mentioned earlier, we were craving the bread sticks and Zuppa Toscana soup.  I could have just eaten this as I had three bread sticks and two bowls of soup.  However, I didn't stop there as I had the Chicken Parmigiana too.  Everything here was good as always.  I know this isn't your authentic Italian restaurant but it's pretty damn good food and we definitely like coming here.

King Egg Roll San Jose

Since we've bought snacks at King Egg Roll for two straight weeks now, I think it's worth a mention here.  When we come to King Egg Roll it's usually for two things - the egg rolls (hence the name King Egg Roll) and the fried chicken.  There are a lot of other things to buy here - chow mein, fried rice, fried shrimp balls etc. but they all pale in comparison to the quality of the egg rolls and fried chicken.

King Egg Roll runs a serious business, on a Super Bowl Sunday we waited an hour just to get their egg rolls.  We usually pick up a tray of egg rolls and fried chicken for poker parties or any other types of gatherings that we attend.  They are always a favorite among the guests as there's not even a crumb left when the party's over.

For those of you interested in trying some awesome egg rolls and fried chicken, here's where you can find King Egg Roll:
