Maruichi Ramen Milpitas

Maruichi is our go to place for ramen.  On Yelp, you will find posts saying other ramen places have higher ratings, etc. but this place has been good for us.  We came here again last night after a pretty long layoff (about 1 month) and the food was good as ever.  Unfortunately the service was slower than usual, it was a busy Friday night and they understaffed as there were only two servers.  However, no complaints from us except taking 15 minutes longer than usual for this quick meal.

Here are the details of what we ordered:

Kuro Ramen - this is my favorite, I don't think you can get it anywhere else.  It's a browned garlic miso broth and it's super tasty.

Nabeyaki Udon - this has egg, shrimp tempura, shittake mushroom, chicken, fish cake, seaweed, green onions

Fried Chicken (aka Chicken Karage) - lightly battered chicken that was deep fried perfectly

For those of you interested in having a good bowl of ramen/udon, here are the details:

Location: 530 Barber Ln Milpitas, CA 95035
Additional note: Cash only here so be sure to bring some

Nick's on Main

Every so often we'll be posting a flashback on restaurants we've been to in the past.  Starting with Nick's on Main in Los Gatos which is where we went for our first wedding anniversary.  The most memorable dish of the night was something called "Trust the Chef".  Most of the reviewers on Yelp said it was a fried pork belly with a fried egg on top and for the night we went it was exactly that.  This thing was yummy!  Probably 10,000 calories but worth every one of them!  Don't tell me you don't want to try this:

Our other appetizer was also very good, a tuna tar tar tower:

Sadly, we don't remember what our entrees were because the appetizers were so overwhelmingly good.  We highly recommend this place.  For those of you wanting to try this place, here's where you can find Nick's on Main:

Address: 35 E Main St Los Gatos, CA 95032
Telephone Number: (408) 399-6457

Happy Hour at El Toritos

Hate to say it but we were sold on a flyer by El Toritos for a $12.00 three course meal.  For $12.00, you can get either a soup or salad, a choice of five different entrees and a dessert.  When we got there, we were also pleasantly surprised to find out they have a weeknight happy hour menu which has $3.00 margaritas!  Overall, we were stuffed and the food was great.  Great place to go after work to hang out with friends or just have a drink and catch a game in their bar.

For those of you interested in trying this happy hour, here are the details:

Location: Many locations - you can find one on the El Toritos website
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - it's a fun place to go and the price is right during happy hour

Kang Nam Tofu House Milpitas

We came here on Friday, March 18 for their kim chee tofu soup and their tofu pancake - which is one of the best we've ever had.  Another plus with coming here is the free ice cream you get with your meal.  However that's just a plus, the food is really good and reasonably priced.

Here's the details for our meal:

Price: $39.00 for 2 tofu soups and tofu pancake.

Hot Pot City Milpitas

Today we met friends at Hot Pot City in Milpitas.  This is one of those places you can go only once every six months as it's all you can eat meat and yeah there's some veggies there too but who goes to an all you can eat veggie place?  So stuffed as we spent the night stuffing our face with their delicious marinated beef and drinking Sapporo beer.  Luckily we managed to eat some of those veggies too so we don't feel too guilty :-)

We paid $16.95 a person for a weekend dinner, however they have lunch, late night and weekday pricing as well.  A full list of their pricing can be found on their website

Here are the details for those of you interested in gorging and having food coma:

Location: 500 Barber Lane, Milpitas, CA
Telephone: (408) 428-0988
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - we don't always go because otherwise we'll get fat but every few months we try to make it here for some good hot pot and bbq
